Public Hearing on Electoral District Draft Maps Scheduled at This Wednesday’s City Council Meeting

Public Hearing on Electoral District Draft Maps Scheduled at This Wednesday’s City Council Meeting

Since the August 9, 2017 City Council meeting, the Council has received additional public feedback on the three proposed electoral district draft maps. Based on that input, the City Council directed staff to have National Demographics Corporation (NDC) make modifications to the NDC Created Purple Map and create a new map called “NDC Created Map Purple2.”

The City Council will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 starting at 6:30 p.m., Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, City Hall, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City, to receive additional input from the public with regards to the proposed four electoral district draft maps, which include:

You may review these maps at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/electoral-districts. You may also provide your input to the council via email. City Council emails are available at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/mayor-council.

It is the City Council’s goal to further reduce the number of proposed Electoral Districts Maps to one FINAL electoral district map by the end of the Public Hearing scheduled for this Wednesday. Once selected, the final electoral district map will be heard as a first reading of an ordinance on September 13, 2017, and as a second and final reading as an ordinance on September 27, 2017. Both readings will allow additional public input.

Background:
On March 8, 2017, the City Council approved a Resolution initiating procedures for establishing and implementing “by-district” elections for City Council Members starting in November 2018, which is consistent with Elections Code section 10010. The City Council also approved a Resolution specifying the criteria to guide the establishment of electoral districts. These criteria require the districts to be roughly equal in population, and drawn in a manner that does not result in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen to vote on account of race or color.
