1st Annual Tejano Music Fest to Raise Money for Hurricane Harvey Victims – Proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross

The first annual Tejano Music Fest, presented by Volkswagen of Palm Springs, showcases the music, food, art, and culture of Mexican-Americans whose families originate from south, central, and west Texas. The festival takes place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza in Downtown Cathedral City, located at 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero.

With an unprecedented amount of rainfall that flooded the homes of those living in South and Central Texas (many Tejanos) and left utter destruction, the Tejano Music Fest will raise funds from festival goers and donate it to the American Red Cross. In addition, Volkswagen of Palm Springs is also offering residents an opportunity to drop-off any donations prior to the festival at their dealership located at 67909 E. Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. During the festival, the bartenders from the Cathedral City Evening Rotary Club have also announced that they will donate their tips to the American Red Cross.

“Tejano music has a historical connection with the Coachella Valley,” stated Public Arts Commissioner Josie Diaz. “Back in the 1960s and 1970s a wave of Tejanos moved to California in order to work in the fields of our local farms. These families settled in California and have become part of our diverse community bringing with them their music, food, art, and culture. This festival celebrates them and their cultural gifts to our community.”

Tejano music brings together various forms of folk and popular music originating among the Mexican-American populations of Texas. It has the essence of both English and Spanish lyrics and a mix of pop, country and polka music. One of the genre’s major cross-over artists was the late “Selena” who was nicknamed, “The Queen of Tejano.” Additionally, the late Lalo Guerrero, “Father of Chicano Music” and former resident of Cathedral City, was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 1992.

The music festival is a free event being offered by the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission whose mission is to advance performing and visual art in the community.

The festival includes musical headliners include “Mike G y Los Realez” band from Lubbock, Texas, and La Justicia as well as Katie Lee Ledezma y Su Conjunto, Ambixion, Ruben Loredo y Su Conjunto, and Santiago Garza y La Naturaleza. The event will be emceed by Tejano Radio Network’s DJ Jammin J (Jesse Spindola). Admission and parking are free.

Attendees can also receive a special hotel discount from the event’s host hotel, V Palm Springs, by going to the festival website, www.TejanoMusicFest.com.

Major sponsors include Volkswagen of Palm Springs, V Palm Springs, Mother Earth’s Farmacy, Conjunto Crazy Promotions, Cashback Loans, El Informador del Valle, The Law Offices of Rashid Shamim, and the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission.
