It is important to consistently review and discuss crime statistics on a monthly and annual basis and examine the historical crime data regularly to measure our existing policing model and adapt as necessary to crime trends as they develop. The Police Department utilizes current and historical crime data to deploy personnel more effectively and efficiently to assist in reducing crime and fear in the community. The table below represents a two-year comparison of Part 1 crimes reported in Cathedral City in 2022 and 2023.
In 2023, many cities experienced a decrease in violent crimes and increases in property crimes. Cathedral City has shown a similar crime trend as most of the cities United States. In comparing 2022 with 2023, our two-year Part 1 crimes saw a 50% decrease in Homicide, a 20% decrease in Rape, 7% decrease in Robbery, 26% decrease in Aggravated Assaults. The city experienced an 11% increase in Burglary, a 10% increase in Larceny, and a 12% decrease in Motor vehicle Theft. It should be noted felony domestic violence assaults are not included in the overall number of Aggravated Assaults.
In evaluating our Part 1 crimes over a five year period, from calendar year 2019 through calendar year 2023, I looked at total number of Part 1 crimes committed each year. Our totals for each respective year are as follows. 2019 (716 crimes), 2020 (793 crimes), 2021 (912 crimes), 2022 (959 crimes) and 2023 (963 crimes).
Overall Cathedral City experienced a 0.4% increase in Part 1 crimes from 2022 through the end of 2023. Our largest increase occurred with the crime of burglary which includes residential burglary, commercial burglary, and automobile burglary.
I find it significant that each category of violent crime decreased in our city when comparing 2022 to 2023 violent crime categories. Our city's decrease in violent crime is attributed to several factors which include a responsive and proactive police department, having a trusting relationship with our community we serve, and having a good working relationship with other city departments and our allied law enforcement agencies in the Coachella Valley.
In 2023, the police department participated in several community events, and we attended neighborhood watch meetings in various neighborhoods throughout the city. If you are interested in hosting a community meeting and having the police department provide crime prevention presentations please contact Commander Rick Sanchez at rsanchez@cathedralcity.gov or by telephone at (760) 202-2488.
