City of Cathedral City Celebrates Major Infrastructure Improvements

The City of Cathedral City continues to invest in essential infrastructure projects that enhance safety, connectivity, and quality of life for residents and visitors. These infrastructure improvements are managed by the City’s Public Works Department and our Engineering team, which oversee the planning, execution, and completion of essential community projects. Here’s an update on recent construction milestones and upcoming improvements.

REAS Pavement Project Successfully Completed

The City has successfully completed a significant pavement preservation project using Rubberized Emulsion Aggregate Slurry (REAS) technology. This proven method provides exceptional durability and long-term performance for our roadways.

Project Scope:

  • East Palm Canyon Drive
  • Vista Chino Drive
  • Date Palm Drive
  • Seven residential streets between Ramon Road, Date Palm Drive, McCallum Way, and Neuma Drive

The City of Cathedral City Council authorized the Notice of Completion for this project at their August 13 meeting. The final construction cost came in at $1,369,180.55, representing substantial savings of $289,819.45 under the originally approved budget. This project was funded through a combination of Measure A funds, Assessment District 86-5 funds, and Maintenance of Effort General Funds.

The cost savings will be returned to their respective funding sources and made available for other projects within the City’s Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan, maximizing the value of taxpayer investments.

New Bike Route Enhances Community Connectivity

The City of Cathedral City is expanding its bicycle infrastructure with the new Whispering Palms Class III Bike Route. Granite Construction Company has been awarded the contract to build this important transportation corridor.

Project Details:

  • Route: 30th Avenue to Dinah Shore Drive along Whispering Palms Trail
  • Distance: Approximately two miles
  • Funding: SB821 Bicycles and Pedestrians Facilities program

Planned Improvements:

  • Shared lane (“sharrow”) markings for enhanced visibility
  • Comprehensive bicycle route signage
  • Speed feedback radar signs to improve safety
  • Enhanced striping and signing throughout the corridor
  • Pavement rehabilitation tailored to current road conditions
  • Full removal and reconstruction in deteriorated segments between Vega Road and Baristo Road
  • REAS treatment in select areas for optimal surface quality

This project demonstrates the City of Cathedral City’s commitment to creating safe, accessible transportation options for cyclists and pedestrians while promoting healthy, sustainable travel choices.

Looking Forward

These infrastructure investments reflect Cathedral City’s dedication to maintaining and improving essential services while being fiscally responsible. The successful completion of the REAS project under budget and the launch of the bicycle route project showcase effective project management and strategic planning.

Both projects contribute to the City’s long-term vision of creating a well-connected, safe, and vibrant community for all residents and visitors to enjoy.
