Candidates File to Run for City Council Districts 1 and 2

On November 3, 2020, residents living in City Council Districts 1 and 2 will vote for their representative to serve on the city council for the next four years.  This will be the first district election held for District 2 since the City went from at-large to district elections in 2017.  It will be the second district election for District 1 as a Special District Election was held on August 27, 2019 after the passing of Mayor Greg Pettis in early 2019.  Mayor Pettis had lived in District 1.  Districts 3, 4, and 5 voted in district elections in November 2018 for their 4-year representatives.  The mayor and mayor pro tem positions are rotated annually among the five city councilmembers based on seniority; and therefore, there will be no at-large city council elections.  The City Treasurer, the only remaining at-large elected position, was elected in November 2018 to a four-year term.

In District 1, City Councilmember Rita Lamb is seeking re-election and has qualified as a candidate.  Qualified candidates are those who have filed the necessary paperwork and have received a minimum of 20 registered district voters nominating them for the election.   Challenging her for the seat is Alan Carvalho who has qualified as a candidate.

In District 2, Mayor John Aguilar who lives in District 2 is not seeking re-election.  He currently serves as the only at-large member of the city council as he was elected in 2016 prior to district elections.  Seeking to represent District 2 are J.R. Corrales (qualified candidate), Nancy Ross (qualified candidate) and Paul Marchand (waiting on qualification approval).

On May 8, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued Executive Order N-64-20, which orders that a vote-by-mail ballot be mailed to each voter prior to the November 3, 2020 in addition to offering in-person voting locations to be announced at a later date.

Additionally, October 19, 2020 is the last day to register to vote or transfer registration for the November 3, 2020 election.  Voter registration cards are available at City Hall.  Voter registration is also available on the Riverside County Registrar of Voters website at www.voteinfo.net.
