Community Leader Recognized for Decades of Service at City’s State of the City Event
At the 2025 State of the City address on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Golf Resort, the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce presented its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Richard Altman, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to the Cathedral City community over more than two decades.
The event, hosted by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, drew a substantial crowd of community leaders, business owners, and residents who gathered to celebrate the city’s achievements and honor outstanding community members like Altman.
A Legacy of Community Leadership
Richard Altman’s impact on Cathedral City extends far beyond his business ventures. Those who know Richard, especially in the desert communities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Palm Desert and beyond, are in awe of his legacy of community leadership, unwavering support and championship for the LGBTQ+ community.
Pioneering LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Events
One of Altman’s most significant contributions to Cathedral City was his instrumental role in establishing the city’s annual Pride event. In 2015, Richard was instrumental in starting the Cathedral City LGBT+ Days, working alongside former Communications & Events Manager Chris Parman (who was also the event organizer of the city’s 2025 event) to bring community leaders together to organize and support it. This event has since become a cornerstone celebration of diversity and inclusion in the Coachella Valley.
The success of Cathedral City LGBT+ Days demonstrates Altman’s ability to bring communities together. His vision helped transform the city into a more inclusive destination, and the event continues to attract visitors from across the region, boosting local tourism and economic activity.
In addition to his work on LGBT+ Days, Altman was integral in launching the popular Sunday Bed Races, which have become a Cathedral City staple and beloved community tradition.
Business Innovation and Community Investment
As the proprietor of CCBC (Cathedral City Boys Club), Altman has created a unique hospitality destination that has put Cathedral City on the international map. Located just a few minutes from downtown Palm Springs, this 3.5-acre resort has become a significant contributor to the city’s tourism industry.
His commitment to excellence extends beyond the resort itself. With his son Eric, Altman opened the Runway Restaurant, which has become a celebrated dining destination. The restaurant features American casual dining, a full bar, and entertainment that celebrates diversity while serving the broader Cathedral City community.
Philanthropic Spirit and Community Support
Altman’s generosity extends throughout the community through countless charitable contributions and sponsorships. Wherever and when there is need for support, Richard is of service, not only with his generous checkbook, but as a leader also. His support has touched numerous local organizations, charities, and community events.
He was a past President of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City and has spent many years supporting the organization, demonstrating his commitment to youth development and community service.
Most recently, the Cathedral City Senior Center celebrated the dedication of the Richard G. and Anne K. Altman Craft Corner in October 2024. This generous contribution provides local seniors with expanded opportunities for creative expression and demonstrates the Altman family’s commitment to serving residents across all age groups.
Champion of Veterans and Historical Preservation
Beyond his work in Cathedral City, Altman has been a steadfast supporter of important regional causes. He has been a major financial supporter of the LGBTQ Veterans Memorial, America’s first memorial honoring LGBTQ+ veterans. The Memorial was first dedicated at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City on May 27, 2001, and Richard has been one of its champions and benefactors.
Recognition for City Leadership
Altman’s appreciation for civic leadership was demonstrated when he personally honored Cathedral City officials with customized plaques, recognizing their dedication to implementing new community events and supporting initiatives that celebrate the city’s diversity. His recognition of city staff, council members, and the city manager shows his understanding of the collaborative effort required to build a thriving community.
A Well-Deserved Honor
The Cathedral City Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes not just Altman’s business success, but his role as a community builder, advocate for inclusion, and champion of causes that strengthen the social fabric of Cathedral City. His work has helped establish Cathedral City as a welcoming destination that celebrates diversity while fostering economic growth and community pride.
As Mayor Nancy Ross emphasized during the State of the City address, “None of what we’ve accomplished or what we plan to achieve would be possible without the dedication of our city staff, the leadership of our City Council, the engagement of our residents, the innovation of our businesses, and the collaborative spirit that defines Cathedral City”. Richard Altman embodies this collaborative spirit that continues to drive Cathedral City forward.
The award presentation at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Golf Resort was a fitting tribute to a man whose vision, generosity, and leadership have left an indelible mark on Cathedral City. Through his business ventures, community advocacy, and philanthropic efforts, Richard Altman has helped shape Cathedral City into the vibrant, inclusive community it is today.
