Cathedral City Fire Department Offers Tips to Safeguard Your Home From Holiday Fire

Did you know…the top three days of the year for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day?

Ensure your family is safe while sleeping.

Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly with fresh backup batteries in older devices, and replace non-working ones with 10-year, tamper-proof smoke alarms.

Alternatives to candles can be equally as beautiful.

Consider using battery-operated, flameless candles. They can be used for multiple occasions throughout the year and reduce the worry of a fire starting in your home or office.

Other ways to safeguard your home or office from a holiday fire:

  • Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable
  • Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear
  • Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended
  • Keep your live Christmas tree away from heat sources and room exits
  • Water your live Christmas tree daily to keep it from becoming dry
