Cathedral City’s Historic Preservation Committee Forwards Draft Ordinance to City Council with Recommendation for Approval

After final review of the draft Historic Preservation Ordinance, the Historic Preservation Committee has forwarded the ordinance to the City Council with a recommendation for approval. The final review took place at the committee’s meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022.

The purpose of the ordinance is to recognize historical events and people, and to preserve areas and specific buildings of the city reflecting elements of cultural, social, economic, architectural and archaeological history. It’s also intended to stabilize and improve buildings, structures or areas which are of historical, architectural, archaeological or ecological value, to foster civic beauty, to strengthen the local economy and to promote the use of specific buildings and sites for the education and welfare of Cathedral City residents.

City Manager Charlie McClendon and Committee Member Charlotte Hunter-Copper met with officials from the Tribal Historic Preservation Office of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians on November 2, 2021. Recommendations from the Tribe have been incorporated in the draft ordinance.

The Historic Preservation Committee first introduced the historic preservation ordinance on Sept. 21, 2021, which included a discussion led by Chairperson John Rivera, who prepared the original draft. The committee also held meetings on Oct. 26 and Nov. 30, 2021, to review and discuss the ordinance.
