City Council of Cathedral City Approves Contracts for Date Palm Rehabilitation, City Wide Repaving Projects

The City Council of Cathedral City approved the construction contracts to Granite Construction Company in the amount of $4,668,436 for the construction of the Date Palm Drive Pavement Rehabilitation Project and $970,221 to fund roadway Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) throughout Cathedral City at the regular meeting on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Date Palm Rehabilitation Project

Date Palm Drive is a primary economic corridor for Cathedral City and serves as the City’s only north/south truck route. It interconnects with major arterials passing through adjacent jurisdictions, connects to I-10 and East Palm Canyon Drive. The Date Palm Drive corridor is identified as essential roadway to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians (ACBCI) community and is placed on the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) which allocates funding for roadway improvements.

In the past years the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians (ACBCI) has entered agreements with the City to participate in funding of roadways providing access within and leading to Reservation lands. These roadways are important to the ACBCI because they serve the entire ACBCI community. As these roads are identified, these roads are placed into the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) to provide the necessary roadway improvements funding.

In August 2019, an Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City and the ACBCI established the use of TTP funds for the design, construction, and maintenance of public roads classified as Tribal Reservation Roads. Under the MOU, the Tribe will provide up to $5 million over a 10 year-period toward road construction projects. Date Palm Drive is classified as a Tribal Reservation Road and therefore, the Project eligible for this TPP funding.

The construction contract along Date Palm Drive includes the one (1) mile road segment between Ramon Road and Dinah Shore Drive and the Intersection of Date Palm Drive and 30th Avenue. Work will include new asphalt pavement; curb gutter and sidewalks repairs; reconstruction of non-compliant ADA corner curb ramps, striping and signage; and the construction of concrete approach lanes at signalized intersections.
