Community, Council Members and Public Arts Commissioners Restore the “Rainbow Crossing”

On Saturday, March 13, 2021, the city council, public arts commissioners, and members of the community came together and volunteered their time and skills to restore the Mayor Gregory S. Pettis Rainbow Crossing in downtown.  Mayor Pettis was the longest serving member of the city council and the first openly gay candidate to run for political office in the Coachella Valley.  Over his many years in public office, he helped pass legislation that enhanced the civil rights and protections for the LGBTQ community.

The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission first launched the Rainbow Crossing installation in 2016 as part of the annual Cathedral City LGBT Days.  The Rainbow Crossing was the first of its kind in the Coachella Valley that symbolizes the City’s celebration of diversity.  It was dedicated in honor of Mayor Pettis after his untimely passing in January 2019.  Shortly after, the Hollister Co., the global teen clothing company conducted a photo shoot with its models promoting their strong support for GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) at Cathedral City’s Rainbow Crossing.

You can take your own photo or selfie at this iconic spot in the Downtown Arts & Entertainment District as it is located near the Bell Tower at the corner of East Palm Canyon Drive (HWY 111) and West Buddy Rogers Avenue.
