Eagle Canyon Dam Prevented Flooding on East Palm Canyon Drive This Weekend

Cathedral City residents and businesses can be proud of the new Eagle Canyon Dam and Debris Basin for protecting them against flash flooding that occurred throughout the Coachella Valley this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, Palm Springs and Cathedral City area received .81 of an inch of rain in the past 24 hours. Most of the rain total fell during a two-hour period Sunday afternoon.

Reported road flooding in the Coachella Valley mostly occurred for a brief period of time at road intersections with the wash. In 2008 and 2012, flash floods sent water, sediment and debris down Eagle Canyon and into Cathedral City streets, especially on East Palm Canyon Drive.

Although the dam portion of the $9.8 million Eagle Canyon Dam Project is complete, the emergency spillway and accessory work is scheduled to be finished in 2015.
