Public Hearing this Wednesday for City Council Redistricting

Every 10 years, local governments use new data from the Census to redraw their district lines to reflect how local populations have changed. The City of Cathedral City is asking for your help to plan, draw, and reapportion new City districts.  The finalized maps that you will help us create will change how you elect your City Council Members for the next 10 years.

On Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 7 pm, the City Council will hold a public hearing to accept comments on two Draft Maps provided by Best, Best & Krieger (https://mapcathedralcity.org/?page_id=10) as well as evaluate any maps submitted by the public.  Any maps submitted by the public by February 1, 2022 will be evaluated and included with any revised maps considered at the third public hearing scheduled for February 9, 2022.  If at the third public hearing the City Council requests additional revisions, those revisions will be presented at a fourth public hearing scheduled for February 23, 2022.

The City Council may, at the third public hearing, narrow the focus and identify a preferred map.  In that instance, staff will also include introduction of an Ordinance approving a final map at the fourth public hearing. Should additional public hearings be necessary to identify and select a preferred map, they will be scheduled accordingly.  The deadline for the City of Cathedral City to complete the redistricting process is April 17, 2022.

Our primary goal when drawing election districts is to draw lines that respect neighborhoods, history and geographical elements.
