Public Invited to Provide Additional Feedback on Initial Designs and Layout Concepts for Cathedral City’s Downtown Amphitheater Park

The Community joined City staff on Monday evening to see the initial concepts and designs for Cathedral City’s downtown outdoor amphitheater park. More than 35 people attended the meeting at City Hall in the Study Session room, offering their thoughts and delights regarding the project.

Attached are the initial design choices for the amphitheater as well as the park’s layout.

One question that many residents asked is what sound impact will it create for those living near downtown. The answer is nothing beyond the scope of our City’s noise ordinance levels. Cathedral City contracted with Veneklasen Associates who are consultants in acoustics and noise. They conducted a noise exposure analysis based on the position of the stage and the type of performance being held. What they discovered is that “Hollywood Bowl” type rock shows and Electronic Dance Music normalized to 85 dB(A) regardless of stage orientation would be in compliance with the City’s noise ordinance before reaching any areas where there is current residential housing. The compliance is primarily due to the stage being lower than the street elevation of Avenida Lalo Guerrero as well as the downtown parking structure and the Desert Cinemas building providing significant height and physical shielding of the sound for those living south of East Palm Canyon Drive.

If you would like to provide your input on the amphitheater’s design or the park’s layout feature, you may do by contacting your councilmembers (http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/mayor-council) or come to any of the upcoming “City Hall at Your Corner” meetings (www.DiscoverCathedralCity.com).

Background:
Cathedral City received a State Parks Grant in the amount of $1.4 million for an outdoor amphitheater and park area in the downtown next to the Civic Center Parking. The City Urban Revitalization Corporation provided matching funds in order to secure the grant. On June 14th, the city council approved a contract with David Evans and Associates (DEA) to design the Outdoor Amphitheater project. The project is slated to be completed by December 2018.
