Sandbags Available for Cathedral City Residents at Fire Station 412 Ahead of Hurricane Hilary

The City of Cathedral City is providing sandbags ahead of Hurricane Hilary, which the National Weather Service projects will move into the Coachella Valley Saturday and bring potentially dangerous storm impacts that include rain, flooding, and high winds through Monday, Aug. 21, 2023.

A Tropical Storm Watch has now been issued for much of Southern California. This is the first Tropical Strom Watch issued by the National Hurricane Center for Southern California. Please see the latest advisory for more information.

To ensure residents are prepared for potential flooding, empty sandbags will be available to residents daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Fire Station 412, located off Ramon Road at 32100 Desert Vista Cathedral City, CA 92234. Shovels will be provided on site by the City’s Public Works Department to make it easier for residents to scoop the sand.

“The Cathedral City Fire Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors especially during times of potential hazards,” said Cathedral City Fire Chief Michael Contreras. “With the potential and anticipated widespread flooding throughout the Coachella Valley we would like to emphasize the importance of being prepared and staying away from flood-prone areas.”

Flooding can pose serious risks to both life and property. It is crucial for all residents to understand the potential dangers and take necessary precautions to stay safe. Here are some important points to keep in mind:

  1. Stay Informed: Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, flood warnings, and advisories issued by local authorities. Pay attention to official announcements and emergency alerts through local media channels.
  2. Plan Ahead: Develop an emergency plan for your family, including primary and secondary evacuation route and a designated meeting point. Ensure everyone in your household is aware of the plan and knows what to do in case of a flood emergency.
  3. Avoid Flooded Areas: It is essential to stay away from flooded streets, rivers, and other water bodies. Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas, as the depth and strength of the water can be deceiving and potentially dangerous.
  4. Electrical Safety: During flooding, be cautious around electrical equipment and power lines. Avoid standing water near electrical sources, as it can conduct electricity and cause severe injuries or even fatalities.
  5. Assistance and Reporting: In case of any emergency or if you witness a flooding situation that requires immediate attention, do not hesitate to dial emergency services. Our dedicated team at the Cathedral City Fire Department is ready to respond and assist you.

The City of Cathedral City urges all residents to take these precautions seriously and prioritize their safety during this storm. By staying informed and following the guidelines provided, we can collectively reduce the risks associated with flooding incidents.
