IGNITE: Where Business Sparks
The centerpiece of Cathedral City’s economic development strategy is the newly launched IGNITE program – a collaborative initiative developed in partnership with the Riverside County Office of Economic Development and the Coachella Valley Women’s Business Center. This comprehensive program offers free business resources to support entrepreneurs and existing businesses at every stage of their journey.

The quarterly report reveals significant growth across Cathedral City’s five strategic pillars of economic development, with particularly strong performance in construction and development activity.
Construction and Development Boom
Cathedral City experienced exceptional growth in construction activity during the first half of 2025:
- Total permits issued increased 32% (1,295 vs. 979 in 2024)
- New home permits surged 235% (87 vs. 26 in 2024)
- Total permit valuation jumped 89% ($51.3 million vs. $27.2 million)
- Inspections performed rose 24% (3,902 vs. 3,137)
Thriving Business Community
The city welcomed over 440 new businesses year-to-date, supported by an active grand opening program that celebrated six new business launches in 2025, including Mega Dollar, Cat City Liquor, Angels Black Tiger Martial Arts and Fitness, CV Optometry, Apong’s Philly Steak, and My Desert Dogs.
Cathedral City’s Economic Development team conducted 133 external meetings and 150 internal meetings with businesses, developers, and stakeholders, demonstrating their commitment to hands-on business support.
Tourism Impact and Regional Collaboration
New data from Tourism Economics and Visit Greater Palm Springs reveals the significant economic impact of Cathedral City’s tourism sector:
- $476M in visitor spending annually
- $72M in direct personal income generated
- 2,200 direct jobs supported by tourism
- $51M in total state and local taxes generated
Visitors spend an average of $1.3 million per day in Cathedral City, with tourism activity equivalent to nearly $3,800 per household in the city.
Strategic Focus on Key Industries
Automotive Industry Analysis
Recognizing the importance of the automotive sector to Cathedral City’s economy, the city has partnered with Kosmont Group to conduct a comprehensive SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of the local auto industry. This strategic assessment, expected to be completed by August 2025, will help guide future economic development decisions in this crucial sector.
Restaurant and Cultural Business Promotion
Cathedral City has partnered with Palm Springs Life Magazine to highlight the community’s diverse restaurant scene through a dedicated “Cultural Cuisines & Diverse Businesses” section, featuring establishments like Monarcha, Spice Rack, Meng’s Filipino Cuisine, Trilussa, and others that contribute to the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Housing and Quality of Life Improvements
The report shows Cathedral City’s commitment to balanced growth, with the average home price at $574,623 in June 2025. The city actively participates in Lift To Rise Policy and Pipeline meetings to identify opportunities for new affordable housing options.
The newly launched Development Dashboard provides real-time transparency into city projects, recording 3,334 views year-to-date and showcasing major developments from submittal to completion in an accessible GIS format.
