City of Cathedral City Receives Grant to Bring Art and Culture to Esperanza Park

City of Cathedral City project among 30 California communities awarded Arts in Parks funding

The City of Cathedral City has been selected to receive a grant as part of the Arts in California Parks initiative, a statewide program that will invest more than $2.6 million in community arts projects across the state.

The local project, titled “Hope Rising: Esperanza Park Cultural Celebration,” will bring artistic and cultural programming to a new park in the Dream Homes neighborhood, an area that has historically had limited access to recreational and cultural amenities.

About the Cathedral City Project

The Hope Rising initiative will transform Esperanza Park—whose name means “hope” in Spanish—into a cultural hub for the community. The project will feature:

  • Mural-making events that engage residents in creating public art
  • Live music performances celebrating local culture
  • Family-oriented art activities
  • Programming that honors both Hispanic and tribal heritage

The goal is to create a welcoming space that reflects the diverse cultural identity of the Coachella Valley while strengthening community bonds and providing residents with meaningful opportunities to connect with art and nature.

Part of Statewide Initiative

The City of Cathedral City’s project is one of 30 selected from a competitive pool of more than 200 applicants statewide. Individual grants range from $28,000 to $150,000, and this represents the second funding round of the program.

The Arts in California Parks initiative is a four-year, $8 million partnership between California State Parks, the California Arts Council, and Parks California. Launched in 2024, the program supports artists, cultural practitioners, Native American tribes, and community organizations in creating art experiences in outdoor spaces throughout California.

According to program organizers, the initiative aims to make parks more welcoming and inclusive by connecting people with creativity, cultural heritage, and nature in their local communities.
