COD President/Superintendent Martha Garcia to Respond to Questions on Planned West Valley Campus at Palm Springs City Council Meeting on Thursday, February 10

Cathedral City residents are encouraged to join the zoom meeting or call in with their comments

The City of Cathedral City has been notified by the City of Palm Springs that Dr. Martha Garcia, the College of the Desert’s newly hired president/superintendent, along with other college representatives, will be on hand for an update and discussion with the City Council regarding COD’s plans for the West Valley Campus and other student facilities in the Coachella Valley at the Council meeting on Thursday, Feb. 10.

The meeting, which starts at 5:30 pm, will be held by teleconference via zoom and can be viewed online at www.palmspringsca.gov, on YouTube, or on Palm Springs Community Television Channel 17. Public comment is encouraged.

The College of the Desert has been in a phase of significant planning, financing and development for the much anticipated new West Valley Campus in Palm Springs since 2004 when voters passed the first of two significant bond measures that raised almost $1 billion in tax revenue.

The update is to provide an opportunity for a discussion with Dr. Garcia and college representatives about recent concerns over stalled plans to develop the West Valley Campus in Palm Springs as well as a recent announcement to abandon plans to build Roadrunner Motors, an automotive training program in Cathedral City. Dr. Garcia has agreed to answer questions from the City Council.

Since these developments occurred, numerous City and resident stakeholder groups have become engaged in advocating that College of the Desert maintain its commitments to build facilities in the West Valley, while also honoring the commitment to build facilities throughout the Coachella Valley.

Cathedral City residents who wish to speak at the Palm Springs City Council meeting may register with the Office of the City Clerk by calling (760) 323-8204. At the appropriate time, a staff member will call members of the public to provide comment.
