Come Celebrate the Grand Opening of Cathedral City’s “Ocotillo Park” – Saturday, December 12 at 10 am

Cathedral City is proud to announce the addition of “Ocotillo Park” to its portfolio of recreational spaces throughout our wonderful city. The nearly $5 million park features two basketball courts, skate board park, soccer field/multi-purpose field, baseball field with bleachers, two children’s play areas, adult fitness area, perimeter walking trail, active water splash pad area, restroom/concession stand building, grand picnic shelter with barbeques, two smaller covered picnic areas with barbeques, entry courtyard, parking lot and plenty of seating benches – all on 5.05 acres. The park was completely designed and constructed thanks to voter approved funding through California Proposition 84 in 2006.

Located at the corner of Ocotillo Road and Moreno Road in Cathedral City, the park exhibits many environmentally friendly design features such as state-of-the-art LED lights for the basketball courts and skate board park, solar-powered LED lights along the perimeter of the walking trail, and advanced sports field stadium lighting for the soccer/multi-purpose field and baseball field.

“Ocotillo Park” utilizes desert landscape with lush and efficient plants including the namesake ocotillo plants.

A Grand Opening celebration occurs this Saturday, December 12, 2015 beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a HIGH FITNESS Exercise Demonstration by co-founders Emily Nelson and Amber Zenith along with Coachella Valley’s Jaime Mendez from Dynamic Dance & Fitness of Cathedral City. HIGH FITNESS is a hardcore, fun fitness class that incorporates interval training with music you love and intense easy to follow choreography.

The Grand Opening Ceremony starts at 10:00 am with a Welcome by Mayor Stan Henry and project reflections by current Parks & Community Events Commissioner Chair Diane Hines and former Parks Commissioner Chair Shauna McGloin. A ribbon cutting will follow their remarks.

At 10:30 a.m. light refreshments will be provided by Agape Church and Wienerschnitzel Restaurant near the Grand Picnic Shelter as local musical favorite, Avenida Band performs holiday and pop music. Additionally, Epidemic Skateboard Shop of Cathedral City will conduct skateboard demonstrations at the skate board park and offer a best trick contest for local skaters. DJ Alf Alpha will spin the music and skateboard gear vendors will be offering free giveaways.

The City of Cathedral City will also raffle off a brand new Schwinn 700 c Dual Sport Bike in its continuing effort to promote healthy living.

The park will be open daily from dawn to 10:00 p.m.
