Mark Carnevale Becomes Mayor of Cathedral City

With the recent and unexpected passing of Mayor Gregory S. Pettis, the city council last night appointed Mark Carnevale to the position of mayor for Cathedral City.  Mayor Carnevale previously served as mayor pro tem and has served on the city council since being elected in 2014.  Carnevale was re-elected in November 2018 to represent council district 3.  Since Mayor Carnevale is filling in to serve the remainder of the late Mayor Pettis’ term as mayor, and would have been the next mayor in line to serve after Pettis, he will serve as Cathedral City’s mayor until early December 2020 in accordance to municipal code 2.04.180.

In addition to Mayor Carnevale’s appointment at last night’s council meeting, Councilmember John Aguilar was appointed to the position as mayor pro tem.  He, too, will serve in that position until early December 2020.  Mayor Pro Tem Aguilar was elected by the voters to the City Council on November 8, 2016. He had previously served on the Council as an appointed member from September 2014 to early December 2014, and once more following former Councilmember Stan Henry’s election to Mayor in December 2014 to December 2016.

The city council will hold a public discussion on how best to fill the seat vacated by the death of Mayor Gregory Pettis at its February 13, 2019 council meeting.  The public will have an opportunity to provide input.
