As part of this stellar day of Latin-American music, Alyssa Burno, Education and Events Coordinator for PS Phil, will also produce two master classes for high school music students and invited guests, presented in collaboration with Minería Symphony Orchestra Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto as well as Grammy® Award-winning trumpeter Pacho Flores, underscoring PS Phil’s ongoing commitment to music education and community engagement.
Founded in 1978 to pursue musical brilliance, Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería has grown under the leadership of Grammy® Award–winning conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto, into one of Latin America’s most dynamic and prestigious orchestras. Its signature summer seasons feature compelling programs that pair cornerstone masterworks with newly commissioned pieces written expressly for the orchestra, championing today’s composers.
Several commissions have already become modern classics, including Gabriela Ortiz’s Concierto Voltaje, Mario Lavista’s Ficciones, and Manuel Enríquez’s Sonatina.
Sinfónica de Minería’s artistry has earned major distinctions: the Latin GRAMMY® for Best Classical Contemporary Composition awarded to Paquito D’Rivera for Concerto Venezolano (recorded by Pacho Flores and Sinfónica de Minería); becoming the first Latin American orchestra in residence at the Bravo! Vail Music Festival (June 20, 22 & 23, 2024) and a GRAMMY® nomination with violinist Philippe Quint for their 2009 Naxos recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto.
Beyond accolades, the orchestra advances a far-reaching educational mission, using music as a catalyst for meaningful community engagement. In its 2025 Summer Season, the orchestra welcomed Pulitzer Prize–winning composer John Adams, who conducted his own Violin Concerto with soloist Augustin Hadelich.
Minería’s program will include: Chavez: Symphony No. 2, Revueltas: Noche de los Mayas, Marquez: Danzon No. 2, Moncayo: Huapango, Galindo: Sones de Mariachi.
Marisa Corvo was raised in a lively Italian family and was inspired to get into music by her trumpet-playing dad. As you can imagine, she was exposed to music since a young age, so much so that she performed at Carnegie Hall at age 9.
Fast forward to 2012 when she made it to American Idol Season 11 and in 2020 she was part of The Voice Season 19 after a strong performance of Pink’s “Perfect” for her blind audition, turned 3 judges chairs and joined team Kelly. Even though she didn’t win, both shows put her on the map in the music industry.
Mariachi Arco•Iris de Los Angeles, or The Los Angeles Rainbow Mariachi in English, is the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi. A unique and dynamic ensemble representing the traditions of the rich culture of Mexico, this group was created as a haven for mariachi musicians who identify as LGBTQ+ to come together and perform traditional Mexican regional music. Led by director Carlos Samaniego, Mariachi Arco•Iris de Los Angeles performs its repertoire to suit the LGBTQ+ community while also introducing beautiful Mexican folk music to new audiences.
In 2023, The Los Angeles Rainbow Mariachi received two awards for the work
and message of inclusivity that they promote through their passionate music. Then in 2024, they debuted their third album in celebration of their 10-year anniversary.
Furthermore, this historic group made their PBS debut and was honored by the Los Angeles City Council at the historic Los Angeles City Hall during the 2024 Pride Month Kick-Off ceremony.
This last year, the Rainbow Mariachi performed alongside the Gay Freedom Band of Los Angeles (GFBLA) at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA for an incredible collaboration of tradition and contemporary Mexican folk music, as well as an epic medley from the movie/musical West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.
The Cathedral City High School Ballet Folklórico, under the direction of Mr. Gabriel Ruiz, was founded in the summer of 2016 and has since achieved recognition in the Coachella Valley. Drawing on the artistic variety of Mexico’s different regions, the Cathedral City High School Ballet Folklórico has a dance repertory of over 50 pieces.
Their program serves students in grades 9-12 and is embedded in three Ballet Folklórico classes with a total of 160 students currently enrolled, and 38 students in their performing group. The purpose of their program is to have Ballet Folklórico students take on a leadership role that extends outside of the classroom and beyond the school community teaching them about the Hispanic culture through music, dance and the arts. The troupe participates regularly in yearly events in and out of the Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Known as the “Royal Jazz Band,” the Cathedral City High School Jazz Band is a performance-oriented ensemble specifically designed for serious, and dedicated musicians by audition only. The primary goal and function of the Jazz Band is to introduce students to a wide array of jazz literature at the highest level, while also giving them knowledge to delve further into music at Cathedral City High School and beyond.
The CCHS Jazz Band has garnered a reputation as being one of the finest jazz bands in the Coachella Valley. The CCHS Jazz Band has performed in collaboration with The Archipelago Group, and has been featured on local radio and television. In 2008, the CCHS Jazz Band released its first professionally produced compact disc entitled “Cathedral City Collaboration” with jazz artists Buddy Greco and Lezlie Anders. Additionally, the Jazz Band holds yearly clinics with professional jazz artists-in-residence.
The festival is made possible through the generous support of Riverside County Supervisor 4th District, Tim Jochen & Lee Erwin, Telemundo 15, KESQ News Channel 3, La Poderosa, The CW, El Informador, Palm Springs and Indio Post.
