Due to more detections of West Nile virus in mosquito samples collected, additional neighborhood mosquito control treatments have been scheduled in the cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and La Quinta.

Where: The applications in Palm Springs and Cathedral City are within the boundaries of Gene Autry Trail, E. Palm Canyon Drive, 30th Avenue, and Date Palm Drive. Applications in La Quinta are within the boundaries of 50th Avenue, Jefferson Street, 54th Avenue and the mountains.

When: October 25-27 from 1am-7am, weather permitting.

A map is available on the website.

The state of California reports 271 human cases of West Nile virus this year, Riverside County reports 13 human cases on the west side of the county, none in the Coachella Valley.

Adult mosquito control targets flying mosquitoes. Treatments will be made using special equipment mounted to trucks and in an ultra-low volume application, dispensing very fine aerosol droplets that control flying mosquitoes on contact. The applications are made at very low dosages, which ensure minimal risk to people and pets.

The public health pesticide, Aqua-Reslin is known for working quickly to kill targeted adult mosquitoes and then biodegrades quickly in the presence of sunlight. It is applied according to label instructions by trained and certified technicians. The product is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

Residents may choose to stay indoors during and for 30 minutes following the application as a best practice to reduce exposure. After going back outside, residents should not see any visual signs of the treatment on their property.

Prevent mosquito bites:

  • Stay inside at dawn and dusk when these mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear insect repellent. EPA registered ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535 (as directed on the product label).
  • Cover up. Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Check window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

Prevent mosquitoes around your home:

  • Check lawn drains for water and debris. Clean drains regularly.
  • Inspect yards for standing water sources. Drain water that collects under potted plants, birdbaths, tires, and any other water holding containers.
  • Clean and scrub pet dishes and water features weekly.
  • Swimming pools, ponds, and fountains require working pumps and regular maintenance.

About West Nile Virus. West Nile virus is a serious illness. WNV spreads when a female mosquito bites an infected bird. The mosquito then can become a carrier and transmit the virus to people. Although most infected people will have no symptoms, others will develop fever, headaches, and body aches. Hospitalization is required in some cases, and in rare cases, death occurs. People with symptoms should contact their health care provider.
