S.C.R.A.P. Gallery Designated as Lead Agency to Engage Youth on National Days of Service

S.C.R.A.P. Gallery will serve as a Youth Service America Lead Agency, mobilizing Coachella Valley’s young people to lead volunteer service projects that help meet community needs on 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance (September 11, 2021), M.L.K. Day of Service (January 17, 2022) and Global Youth Service Day (April 29-May 1, 2022). 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance is officially designated as a National Day of Service by the 2009 Serve America Act.

For 9/11, S.C.R.A.P. Gallery is working to provide opportunities for youth to participate in service projects.    As part of these projects, S.C.R.A.P. Gallery is participating as one of 100 sites for the 9/11 Flag of Honor memorial. The 9/11 Flag of Honor was created by the Flag of Heroes project. The 9/11 Flag of Honor contains names of those who perished in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, United flights 175 and 93, and American flights 11 and 77.

The flag will be unveiled at Nellie N. Coffman Middle School in Cathedral City. The school is sending 1000 thank you cards to first responders, active-duty military personnel, and veterans. A limited amount of memorial wildflower seed packets created by students will also be distributed on 9/11 at commemorative events.

These projects are made possible by funding from Y.S.A., Mott Foundation, AmeriCorps, Global Youth Justice, and Cathedral City Evening Rotary.
