The Category was “70s – 80s Disco, the venue was at a capacity crowd on a Monday night, and the entertainment did not disappoint. Hosted by Anita Treadmill and music by DJ Galaxy, eight contestants (one was out ill, but is scheduled this week) performed their best disco routine to an eager crowd waiting with dollars to tip.
Five judges (Councilmember Raymond Gregory, KGAY 106.5 FM/Gay Desert Guide’s Brad Fuhr, GED Magazine’s Eric Davis, Dinner with Patsi, and Sister Penney Pasta) awarded scores on originality, themed outfit, personality, and performance. The competition produced a ranking of contestants from the judges with just 12 points between the first and last place position. Leading the pack was Sue Madre, followed by Sheena Wolfe, and Kitt.
Then it got shady! Each contestant spun the “Wheel of Shade” allowing an opportunity to take away or give points to an opponent. Three contestants gave points to their competition based on their spin, but five took away points. Four of the five who took away points went after the first-place position, Sue Madre. Then out of nowhere Sheena Wolfe had an opportunity to take away 3 points from Sue Madre but instead took away points from Ashley Araya Sparks who was in sixth place. Now that’s shade!
After the wheel of shade portion of the competition, the tables were turned and leading the race was Sheena Wolfe, Kitt, and then Sue Madre. However, the crowd gets the last word (or holler) as the contestant who got the loudest cheer won 25 additional points. The crowd picked Sue Madre – sending her right back to the top of the pack ending the week with 62.7 points and winning the first competition.
The race is not over! The winner is still undecided as they will compete next at the Barracks Bar, 67625 E Palm Canyon Dr # C7 in Cathedral City on Monday, September 16th with cocktails at 6 pm and show at 7 pm. Come cheer on your favorite contestant, meet some new friends, laugh, and bring a few dollars to tip.
