As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, the Cathedral City Fire and Police Departments want to remind all residents and visitors that all fireworks remain strictly prohibited within city limits. This comprehensive ban includes consumer fireworks, sparklers, and any other pyrotechnic devices.
Serious Penalties for Violations
The use or possession of fireworks in Cathedral City carries significant financial consequences:
- First offense: $1,000 fine
- Subsequent offenses: Additional $2,000 fine (total of $3,000)
- Property owners who allow guests to use illegal fireworks may also face fines
Protecting Our Community
This prohibition exists to safeguard the health and welfare of our entire community, including:
- Veterans suffering from PTSD who may be triggered by unexpected loud noises
- Neighbors seeking peaceful enjoyment of their homes
- Beloved pets who experience distress from fireworks
- Children and elderly residents sensitive to sudden sounds
Fire Safety in Our Desert Environment
Cathedral City’s location in the dry desert environment makes our community particularly vulnerable to wildfire risks. High winds and arid conditions can quickly turn a momentary celebration into a devastating emergency.
“Cathedral City resides in a very dry, desert environment that is prone to wildfires. Shooting off fireworks poses an additional risk, especially in high wind areas,” states Chief Michael Contreras. “In 2021, fireworks likely caused extensive fire damage to a home and six automobiles in Cathedral City. Neighbors on both sides also received damage to their homes. Fortunately, no one was hurt or killed in this incident.”
Professional Alternatives Available
Residents looking to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks can enjoy professional displays at various locations throughout the Coachella Valley. These professionally managed events provide the excitement of fireworks while maintaining proper safety protocols and legal compliance.

The enforcement of this fireworks prohibition reflects the clear will of Cathedral City residents who have advocated for increased public safety measures. Both our Fire Department and Police Department, along with community members, take this matter seriously and are committed to maintaining the safety and peace of our neighborhoods.
This Fourth of July, we ask all residents to celebrate responsibly and consider the wellbeing of their neighbors, veterans, pets, and the broader community. Together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone in Cathedral City.
