Community Update

by Pat Milos, Community Development Director

As the summer comes to an end and we prepare for our snowbirds and visitors to start to arrive, we will see the culmination of two major Public Works projects and a major corridor traffic control and beautification project in Cathedral City.

The Date Palm Bridge Widening project is nearing completion. Riverside Construction (Contractor) has completed the work on the concrete barriers and pilasters along the bridge. This week the Contractor will be taking measurements for the decorative railing on these barriers. Additionally, the Contractor is currently grinding and grooving the new deck. Traffic Control has been switched to begin work on the median curb and approach slabs. In addition to this work, Riverside continues to work underneath the bridge on the slope protection. Riverside will be pouring concrete on the 32-foot trench for grade control as part of the slope protection. The motoring public should be aware that as we near completion you will see more Cone Zone changes, so please give the bridge workers a break and keep your speeds down through the construction zones. This project is scheduled to be completed the last week of October.

Dinah Shore Drive/Date Palm Drive Intersection Reconstruction and Dinah Shore Drive Pavement rehabilitation: All American Asphalt (Contractor) continues to base pave this week. The contractor will be flipping traffic next week to complete the base paving on the other lanes; occurring over the next two weeks. All concrete work at the intersection and cross gutters has been completed along with the median curb replacement. Again, I want to emphasis that as we near completion you will see more Cone Zone changes, please give the construction workers major consideration and drive as safely as possible through the construction zones. This Project is also scheduled to be completed in early October.

Also, a new median island was installed over the summer on East Palm Canyon just east of the intersection of Date Palm Drive. Urban Habitat Environmental Landscapes (the Contractor) has completed the landscaping and flat work on the median. This project is designed to be completely sustainable with no water requirements and solar lighting and will improve traffic safety at the location as well as add beauty and vibrancy to the corridor. The Cathedral City Arts Commission acquired and placed the Betty Gould sculpture in the median. The associated lighting is will be installed over the next two weeks and additional ornamental metal agaves will add the finishing touches. This project will be completed in October.

These projects will be a major improvement to the City infrastructure. Thank you for your patience during the construction. The Community will enjoy these improvements for years to come
