Community Update by Pat Milos
Community Development Director

The summer is coming to a close and the City is gearing up for the fall and winter seasons. Over the next couple of months we will see an increase in road work and other Public Works Projects.

Dream Homes: Phase 3 of the City’s 5-year Pavement Maintenance Program is in full swing with the Public Works Crews devoting the majority of their time to crack sealing in the Dream Homes area in preparation of a large Rubberized Emulsion Aggregate Slurry (REAS) seal project that will cover the entire neighborhood. This will refresh and seal the streets in that neighborhood and add an additional 7-to-10 years of surface life to the road.

The San Joaquin sidewalk project is wrapping up and proved successful and beneficial to the neighborhood by adding nearly ½ mile of new interconnecting sidewalks to the neighborhood for increased walkability and safety.

At the eastern edge of the Dream Homes and running from Vista Chino south to Ramon Road the Cathedral City Whitewater River Channel Bike Path will soon be under construction. Engineering Staff is securing the last required easements and agreements for the properties that this project will impact. Bids were solicited and received and will be presented to the City Council for approval in October. Construction will follow shortly after with a completion goal of April 2017.

Major Road Renovations: Date Palm Drive/Cathedral Canyon Drive Rehabilitation Project (including EPC median) will be starting the first part of October. This project will consist of a complete full depth asphalt and road base renovation on both thoroughfares starting at Perez Road and running south to East Palm Canyon. The project will start in October and be completed in November, the results being a new and improved driving surface leading into the Downtown area as well as including the construction of a new landscape median on East Palm Canyon near the eastern entrance of the City. The median will be hardscaped and include a new monument sign and related beautification amenities.

The Entire 2 miles of Vista Chino Drive will undergo an asphalt surface renovation commencing in November and running through January. This is a major undertaking with 5 lanes being renovated from our westerly border with Palm Springs at the Morongo Wash, to the eastern terminus at Date Palm. The construction will impact residential neighborhoods as well as a commercial corridor and, once finished, will be a major improvement to the motoring public.

In addition, two major collectors that provide service to all the Panorama Neighborhoods will be resurfaced. La Paz Avenue and La Vista Drive will be reconstructed. The north/south streets run from Vista Chino to 30th Avenue and border the eastern and western edges of the City’s largest residential neighborhood. Each street consists of 2 lanes, one mile in length. The benefit of this project will be felt by the entire Panorama neighborhood.

New ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulation ramps will be installed on McCallum and 30th Avenue with work to commence soon. These ramps will improve the walkability and safety of some of our major routes to school.

While this is exciting news for all of us it will also require some patience during construction. The City will work hard to communicate traffic delays to the public during construction and try to reduce the inconvenience to the motoring public as well as residents and businesses.
