Mayor and City Council of Cathedral City Honor Two Outstanding High School Students with Street Naming Ceremony

Cathedral City Mayor Raymond Gregory, Mayor Pro Tem Ernesto Gutierrez, and Councilmembers Rita Lamb, Nancy Ross, and Christina Gordon unveiled two new street signs on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, to honor two high school students from Cathedral City for their academic excellence.

The Annual Student Street Naming Ceremonies recognized Mr. Matthew Bustamante of Mt. San Jacinto High School and Mr. David Delgado-Naranjo of Cathedral City High School by renaming the street adjacent to their schools for one year.

Matthew Bustamante

Matthew Bustamante graduated one semester early from Mt. San Jacinto High School and is currently enrolled and attending College of the Desert. During his time at MSJHS, he served as one of the Mathletes, played on the softball team, and was team manager for volleyball. After a difficult start to high school, Matthew turned things around and is now pursuing his passion to become an architect through architecture classes at COD. He was chosen for this honor due to his academic success, positive attitude, and dedication to his education and goals.

David Delgado-Naranjo

The Golden Lion is the single most prestigious honor a Cathedral City High School student can earn, and this year that honor goes to David Delgado-Naranjo. David is a full International Baccalaureate candidate. He was awarded male Athlete of the Year and served as captain of the basketball team. He organized CCHS’s Unified Sports game and was one of the organizers of the Think Together LEGO Robotics camp. He has also participated closely with Sunnylands School Programs. David will attend UC Berkeley in the fall to major in Civil Engineering.

The ceremony was attended by the full Cathedral City Council, along with Sergio Espericueta, Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) Board of Education President, Dr. Marcus Funchess, PSUSD Superintendent, Joan L. Boiko, PSUSD Coordinator of Communications & Community Outreach, Anne Ambrose, Assistant City Manager, and Ryan Hunt, Director of Communications & Engagement.
