Community Update

By Acting Chief Anthony Yoakum and
School Resource Officer Charles Siqueiros

School Safety

As we approach the end of the first month of school, it’s time to remind our parents and children of how to remain safe while walking to and from school.  It is important to develop a safe Walking Plan with your child.  Below are a few key points you can discuss with your children in your planning.

Walking with Groups
Stay with a group.  Always walk with at least one friend, two or three is better.

Safe Walking
Stick to the route discussed with your parents (Safe Walking Plan).  Never use shortcuts through empty lots, alleys, fields, etc.  Avoid empty buildings and isolated areas.

No Headphones
Don’t wear headphones.  Always be aware of your surroundings.  Always assume you are invisible, and motorists do not see you.

Strangers Offering Rides
If a stranger offers you a ride, shout “NO!” and stay far away from their car.  Immediately run away from the person to a safe location.

Asking for Help
If someone is following you on foot or in a car, go to a place where there are other people – to a neighbor’s home or into a store, and immediately ask for help.

Leaving School
Never leave school with a stranger, or anyone for that matter without parent consent.

Defense Safety
Noise is the best defense – yell, scream, shout, scatter books and belongings if forced into a car.  Remind your child you will not get in trouble for defending yourself in an emergency.

Bus Stop Safety
Move away from any car that pulls up to the bus stop.

School/Playground Safety
Tell a trusted adult if a stranger is hanging around the school or playground.

Strangers Offering Gifts
Never accept things from a stranger.

Strangers Asking Questions
If a stranger asks you a question, don’t talk to them.  Run away.

Code Words
Another helpful suggestion is to share a code word with your child known only among family members.  It is important to stress anyone offering a ride unexpectedly – even a family friend – will have been given the code word in advance.

Now a note to the parents about driving in school zones and picking up or dropping off your children.
Be patient and slow down!  Drive cautiously and follow the rules of the road.  If the school has put a plan in place on how to pick up or drop off your child, please follow it.  We will be patrolling the school zones looking for violators.
