Community Update

April 1st is U.S. Census Day and
Cathedral City Must Be Counted

Every ten years, the U.S. Constitution requires that every person living in the United States must be counted.  April 1st is the official U.S. Census Day; meaning that wherever you reside on April 1, 2020 is the location of “where” you should be counted.  Starting on March 12 through March 20, most everyone in Cathedral City will receive a letter in the mail from the U.S. Census Bureau asking that they begin filling out the questionnaire.  The first person living at a resident will have more questions to answer than any additional resident.  For other residents, it will mostly ask for your relationship to the first person including your name, age, etc…

For the first time in history, residents can submit their answers to an online questionnaire for expedited processing and cost savings to the federal budget.  Simply go to www.2020Census.gov to submit your information.  Residents can also submit via the mail and or by telephone.

Here are some important details about answering the U.S. Census:

  1. All information submitted is confidential for 72 years.
  2. The information submitted is for statistical information only.
  3. Information from the U.S. Census determines where the federal government spends an estimated $800 billion annually.
  4. It determines apportionment of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used for drawing district lines at all levels of government.
  5. U.S. Census is offering language guides, language glossaries, and language identification card in 59 non-English languages.

For Cathedral City, the U.S. Census is incredibly important as each person counted represents approximately $2,000 per year for the following programs and more:

Health Care:  Medicare, Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Program

Food Assistance:  Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, National School Lunch Program

Education:  Title 1 Grants to Local Education Agencies, Special Education Grants, Head Start / Early Head Start

Highways and Bridge Construction and Repairs

Housing Assistance

Community Development Block Grants

The City of Cathedral City needs every resident to understand the importance of this once in a decade civic duty to be counted.  Again, all information submitted remains confidential for 72 years.  Our schools, roads, health care, and nutritional programs for our school children COUNT on you and your family being COUNTED.  If you fail to turn in your Census questionnaire in a reasonable amount of time, a person from the U.S. Census Bureau will come knocking on your door to interview your household in person.
