The City of Cathedral City has a busy construction season underway, with multiple projects improving roadways, pedestrian safety, and community amenities across the city. Here’s a look at what’s active, what’s coming, and what drivers should know before hitting the road.
East Palm Canyon Drive (Hwy 111): One Westbound Lane in Effect
The most visible project affecting drivers right now is along East Palm Canyon Drive (Highway 111) between Date Palm Drive and Van Fleet Drive, where westbound traffic has been reduced to one lane. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians is constructing a new fueling station in the area, and the City of Cathedral City’s Engineering Division has reviewed and approved the traffic control plan to ensure safe passage through the construction zone.
Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and observe all posted speed limits and signage. The road is expected to return to full width and reopen to all lanes by April 3, 2026 — just ahead of the busy Coachella Valley festival season.
A second phase of this project will bring construction to Monty Hall Drive following the conclusion of the 10th Annual Cathedral City LGBT+ Days celebration (March 6–8). Northbound traffic on Monty Hall Drive will be affected, while southbound travel will remain open throughout.
Panorama Neighborhood Pavement Rehabilitation: Nearly Complete
Good news for Panorama neighborhood residents — the pavement rehabilitation project covering Corta Road and Alcita Road is 99% complete. As a finishing touch, Engineering staff recently coordinated with contractor Vance Corporation to address a section of Durango Road between Avenida La Paz and Whispering Palms Trail that was identified during a post-construction quality review. The corrective slurry seal work was completed on March 4, 2026, and passed final inspection.
The project, funded through Measure W and Measure A, represents a total investment of over $1 million in neighborhood streets.
Traffic Safety Improvements Coming to Intersections Citywide
Several federally funded Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) projects are currently underway or in active development across the city:
HSIP 9A – Twelve Intersection Safety Improvements (Dilemma Zone): This project, now 40% complete, improves signal timing at 12 intersections to reduce dangerous “dilemma zone” situations where drivers must make split-second decisions about whether to stop or proceed at a yellow light.
HSIP 11B – Signalized Pedestrian Crossing Upgrades: Now 10% complete, this project will install two HAWK pedestrian signals at key crossings, providing safer, more visible crossing opportunities for pedestrians.
HSIP 11C – Citywide Traffic Signal Hardware Upgrades (49 Intersections): At 25% completion, this project is installing LED safety lighting, traffic signal backplates, and retroreflective signal heads at 49 intersections throughout Cathedral City. Work began in early March along the Date Palm Drive corridor and is expanding citywide.
HSIP 11D – Pedestrian Crossing at 30th Avenue and San Eljay Avenue: Now underway at 15% completion, this project will add a safe, dedicated pedestrian crossing at this key intersection.
Mountain Cathedrals Entryway Monument Coming to East Palm Canyon Drive
Work has begun on a new neighborhood entryway monument for the Mountain Cathedrals community on the east side of East Palm Canyon Drive. The project is currently 5% complete and is funded through a combination of District Funds, Gas Tax, and Measure A. The monument will add a lasting neighborhood identity marker and beautify the Eastern gateway along the corridor.
Coming Soon: Whitewater Area Street Reconstruction
Bids have been received for the Whitewater Area Street Reconstruction project, and a contract award recommendation will be presented to City Council at the March 11, 2026, City Council meeting. Once awarded, this project will bring significant road improvements to the Whitewater neighborhood.
In Design: Sidewalks, Bridges, and More
Behind the scenes, the City’s Engineering team is advancing several projects through the design pipeline:
The Cathedral Canyon Sidewalk Project — which will install new sidewalk along Cathedral Canyon Drive from Paseo Azulejo to Kieley Road — has received bids, with an opening date of March 11, 2026. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
Major infrastructure investments are also progressing in design, including the Ramon Road Bridge and Roadway Widening (design complete at 100% PS&E), the Vista Chino Bridge (60% design), and the Date Palm Drive North of I-10 Widening (30% design). These large-scale projects reflect the City’s long-term commitment to improving regional connectivity and safety.
Plan Ahead and Stay Safe in Construction Zones
The City of Cathedral City thanks drivers and residents for their patience and cooperation as these improvements take shape. Please observe posted signs, slow down in all construction zones, and allow extra travel time where lane restrictions are in place.
