Police Chief Crum Gives Update on Crime Statistics

Police Chief George Crum gave an update to the city council on Wednesday regarding 2021 Part 1 Crime Statistics.  Although Cathedral City had an uptick in crime, it is still in the Top 50 Safest Cities in California.

Police Chief Crum reported that homicides had been reduced 40 percent over the year before as 2020 reported 5 homicides compared to 3 homicides in 2021.  The number of rapes had reduced by 26.6% year over year, and robberies had been reduced by 3.1%.  Where the uptick in Part 1 Crimes occurred was a 30.1% increase in aggravated assaults, 13.2% increase in burglaries, and a 41.6% increase in motor vehicle theft.

Cathedral City had an overall increase of Part 1 Crimes of 15%.  In comparison to other nearby cities, Palm Springs had a 40% increase and Desert Hot Springs had a 21% increase.

It is important to note that no other city in the Coachella Valley was ranked, on a per capita basis, as being in the Top 50 Safest Cities in California.
