Check out the latest episode of CCTV’s “The Art of Cathedral City,” the series highlighting the artists, galleries, and creative energy that make Cathedral City a place where art lives!
In this episode, Host Conrad Angel Corral explores the creative worlds of two artists whose working studios anchor Building H of The Perez Art District: Shelley Heffler and Mark Hollenstein. Though their approaches could hardly be more different, both share a studio community devoted to creativity, sustainability, and connection.
Shelley Heffler: Rescued Refuse and Eco-Conscious Art
Working from Studio H-14, Bronx-born artist Shelley Heffler creates striking modern abstract work by upcycling discarded vinyl street banners — transforming urban waste into textural, sculptural pieces with an architectural feel. Through meticulous hand-cutting techniques, she fractures each banner’s original image and reassembles it into weavings, collages, and three-dimensional constructions that bear little resemblance to the source. Her ongoing Rescued Refuse series salvages these vinyls before they reach the landfill, encapsulating the human footprint and the connection between consumption and environmental waste.
Shelley studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before earning her Master’s in Fine Art, and she taught ceramics and fine art for the Los Angeles Unified School District for more than 25 years, also serving as an adjunct professor at Otis College of Art and Design. Her work merges sustainability with contemporary design, and her community-driven practice includes collaborative projects such as We Are Home — 130 public-made quilt pieces auctioned to benefit the unhoused and exhibited at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster — and the It Takes a Village quilt project from her artist residency at Inglewood’s Rogers Park. Commissions are welcome, and studio visits are available by appointment.
Mark Hollenstein: Visionary Abstracts and Signature Frequency Portals
Just steps away in Studio H-6/7, Mark Hollenstein works in acrylic on canvas, creating bold abstract paintings that explore movement, light, and resonance. A visionary artist and intuitive healer, Mark describes an ability he’s had since a young age to perceive vibrant colors surrounding the people around him — and his paintings translate that sensibility into vivid, high-vibrational compositions meant to elevate the viewer’s energy.
With more than 30 years of experience in massage, energy healing, and coaching, Mark brings a deeply personal dimension to his art. His commissioned Signature Frequency Portals render an individual’s unique energetic essence as mesmerizing, mandala-like designs — a visual “thumbprint” within the larger cosmos, meant to invite reflection and inner clarity. Mark was previously part of the Coachella Valley Art Center in Indio, home to more than two dozen artists for over a decade, before the building was reclaimed in December 2023 and he and several fellow artists found a new creative home together in The Perez Art District.
Where Art Lives
Both artists maintain working studios in The Perez Art District, where the public can watch practicing artists at work, learn about their processes, and purchase art directly. The district hosts its free 4th Friday Art Walk on the fourth Friday of every month from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, along with a Second Saturday Showcase from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM — free and open to the public, September through May.
